THE MUST SEE DVD Duel: Special Edition Universal, [pounds sterling]19.99 Steven Spielberg's first proper film was made for TV, but was so good it got a bigscreen release. The plot - a man in a car (Dennis Weaver) is chased by a man in a truck - is not much, but it's still plenty. Spielberg's films before Close Encounters critiqued mainstream culture; afterwards, they celebrated it. This is the case in Duel, with the big truck representing "The Man".

Media-studies guff aside, from the start Spielberg certainly knew how to shape a drama. If you've seen The Terminal, you'll know how far he has wandered. Perhaps he became the big truck.
