Increased travel to Central and South America could be associated with a rise in imported cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.
A travel history should be obtained in any patient presenting with unusual skin lesions or chronic nasopharyngeal symptoms, a common finding in this type of infection, said Sukbir Ahluwalia and colleagues at the Royal National Throat, Nose, and Ear Hospital, London.
The investigators described three cases in the United Kingdom, all among young, healthy travelers with recent travel to tropical forest areas of Latin America (BMJ 2004;329:842-4).
