Syphilis transmission patterns appear to be changing, with more cases reported among men who have sex with men, and with a substantial proportion being attributed to oral sex, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For example, in Chicago, which had the most reported cases of syphilis (1,582) of any U.S. city between 1998 and 2002, more cases are occurring in men who have sex with men.

About 15% of Chicago's cases in 1998-2000 occurred in men who have sex with men, compared with about 60% of cases since 2001.
