A system for treating yarns that makes them less likely to unravel or shed lint is disclosed in US Patent 6 796 11 5. Gilbert Patrick of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, USA, says that the invention basically consists of a series of yarns that are guided through channels in a needleloom and subjected to punching by barbed needles. This treatment intermixes the fibres of the yarn. Variations can be achieved by adjusting the speed (and so distance) of the yarn travel between needle strokes.

Moreover, spun composite yarns can be created by feeding two different yarns together or by feeding a core-sheath yarn into the system.
