Nearly a decade ago, a scathing article questioning the economic and environmental benefits of recycling riled a generation of recyclers.
"Recycling Is Garbage,'' the New York Times Magazine article that appeared June 30, 1996, made author John Tierney one of the most infamous names in recycling circles. The story dismissed fears of dwindling landfill space and drowning in trash. It audaciously tore at the assumptions that recycling saved money and protected the environment.
