Mar. 31--BAGHDAD -- In the hours before the National Assembly opened for business, Iraqi political leaders desperate to find a suitable candidate for the speaker's post asked American diplomats to help twist arms and broker a deal.
The Americans declined, a U.S. diplomat said Wednesday. And Tuesday afternoon, during only its second session, the Transitional National Assembly collapsed into rancor and retreated into secrecy.
