Mar. 31--HIGH POINT -- High Point businessman and civic leader George W. Lyles Jr. died Wednesday.
He was 84 years old. Friends and business associates said Lyles will be remembered as a consummate businessman and one of its most recognized figures. Born in Charlotte on Nov. 1, 1919, Lyles was the only son of George W. Lyles and Mamie Porter Lyles.
As a small boy, Lyles and the family moved to Thomasville and his father established a dealership for Ford Motor Co. After graduating from Thomasville High School in 1936, Lyles attended McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and then entered Duke University. On Nov. 1, 1941, ...
