The pulp and paper industry ownership base is changing and consolidating, but is also becoming more diversified. This trend not only applies to pulp and paper assets, but to forest ownership; mechanical wood assets; and suppliers of chemicals, consumables, and equipment. Private equity companies have entered the forest industry sector in a major way. Some of these firms, such as Madison Dearborn Partners, have large holdings in pulp and paper companies. For example, Bay State, Buckeye, Forest Products Holdings LLC (d.b.a. Boise Cascade), Graphic Packaging, Jefferson Smurfit, and PCA all are owned at least in part by private equity companies.
