Article: Kids Central takes big step, hires new leader.

Apr. 1--OCALA -- A beleaguered child-welfare group that serves Lake and neighboring counties hired a new director Thursday amid encouraging news that it might keep its $84 million contract with the state.

Directors for Kids Central unanimously approved Cynthia A. Schuler as chief executive officer. She is the administrator for the state Department of Children & Families in District 14, which is made up of Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties.

Don Thomas, DCF administrator for the district that includes Lake, said later Thursday he is optimistic about the group's success.
