Avoid meaningless stereotypes

Just curious: When writers to the Mailbag speak derisively of "the rich," to whom are they referring? To those born with the proverbial silver spoon in their mouths? A few lucky lottery winners? People who work hard all their lives to lay aside funds for retirement so they can avoid living off the government in later years? Only those in the higher income tax brackets? People who pay their bills on time, even if it means taking menial jobs to fill in the gaps when the coffers run low?
