The May 15 beatification of former Syracuse Franciscan leader Mother Marianne Cope is likely to go on as scheduled.
Diocesan officials and a Syracuse Franciscan leader say the Vatican has told them Pope John Paul II's successor will preside at the service in St. Peter's Square in Rome, Italy.
The pope's death does not reverse the decision that Mother Cope will be declared "blessed," the Rev. Peter Gumpel of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints said in February.
