When the Covington and Cincinnati suspension bridge opened to traffic on Jan. 1, 1867, its span of 1,057 feet made it the longest suspension bridge in the world.

Total cost of construction was nearly $1.8 million. Later in 1867, the Covington Street Railway Company laid rails for its horsecars across the bridge, further contributing to the accessibility of Covington.

By July 1868, the streetcars carried 2,600 passengers per day over the bridge.

The guiding light of the Covington and Cincinnati Bridge Co. was Amos Shinkle, who invested in the enterprise and was a member of the board of directors.
