I WRITE A lot about the hodge-podge hedgerow that grows on a sandy remnant of an ancient dune line along the length of my driveway.
Just about untouched by human hands, this long row of mostly native trees, vines, shrubs and ground cover sprung up on its own long before I entered the scene and it has been thriving in pell-mell fashion ever since.
Everything from sassafras to persimmon trees, from yaupon to American hollies grows there. Vines include wild grapes and blackberries, honeysuckle, both Japanese and coral, as well as frightful greenbrier. Some eleagnus and periwinkle migrated from ...
