If you've read enough to convince you that it is worth giving Voice over IP a try, then once you've picked a service, you'll need to invest in some hardware. This doesn't have to be an expensive outlay, and you could choose to initially try making phone calls over the Internet using nothing more than your speakers and PC microphone. However, don't be tempted to make this a long-term option - as we've previously explained, except in the rarest of cases, the sound quality you'll achieve simply isn't good enough.
