The US Navy gave the green light for the building of the first Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) on Dec. 15, 2004, by exercising a contract option with Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors (Moorestown, NJ), valued at $118.2 million, for detailed design and construction of the first Flight 0 ship. Construction of the lead ship of the new class began in early February, with delivery to the Navy scheduled for late 2006.
The Lockheed Martin-led LCS team completed its initial critical design review (CDR) in September 2004, then its final CDR with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Navy's Program Executive Office for Ships (PEO Ships) in early December of ...
