I'd been harboring a desire to travel to Australia and New Zealand for the past four or five years, so last spring (autumn down there), blessed with a chunk of free time, plenty of frequent-flier miles and some helpful introductions, my wife and I set off for six weeks--four in Australia and two in New Zealand. The trip proved to be an eye-opener in terms of art, culture, social orderings and, not surprisingly, landscape. Those six weeks yielded such a plethora of material that one report could scarcely do it justice.
