Readers of criticism on French literature will know Professor Lucey's work from his 1995 book on Gide's Bent: Sexuality, Politics, Writing. In stepping back to treat the writing of Balzac, Lucey might seem to be taking queer theory into the hostile terrain of the patriarch of the Comedie humaine; in other words the Balzac associated with the 'Avant-propos' written towards the end of his series.
