CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. _ Shuttle Discovery crept toward its launch pad Wednesday as hundreds of workers at Kennedy Space Center lined roadsides, rooftops and parking lots to watch the spectacle.
When the 18-story behemoth emerged from the Vehicle Assembly Building a little after 2 p.m. local time, it marked the first time since the Columbia tragedy two years ago that a shuttle would make the six-hour journey.
"It's very significant _ it's a huge milestone for the program," NASA shuttle-program manager Bill Parsons said as a mobile platform inched Discovery toward its coastal launch pad at 1 mph.
