A usually late spring this year may cut sharply into the grain crops of major exporters Russia and the Ukraine, according to analysts. Forecasters say the large scale spring sowing campaign, which normally starts in the two countries at the end of March, has been delayed by up to two weeks this year.
"We may revise downwards our current 2005 grain crop forecast of 73-78 million tonnes if it stays cold in the first week of April, and we will cut down our spring grains area forecast", said Andrei Sizov of the SovEcon analysts in Russia.
