Medical photonics group, Optiscan, could potentially secure a large stake in the $A900 million global market for flexible endoscopes. The company has developed a laser-based system capable of detecting early signs of cancer. Optiscan CEO, Matthew Barnett, claims other flexible endoscopes can only magnify 100 times, whereas Optiscan's device can work at 1,000 times. European and US regulators have approved Optiscan's flexible endoscopes, and Barnett claims the group only needs to achieve one per cent market penetration to break even. Japan-based Pentax has licensed Optiscan's technology.
