Australian-listed ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals is poised to begin phase-2 trials of its cancer treatment in the US. Its ceflatonin drug will be tested on cancer patients in late stages of chronic myelogenous leukemia. The drug is designed for use by patients who are resistant to Gleevec, a drug which is currently used to treat this form of leukemia. It is estimated that up to 50 per cent of leukemia patients are resistant to Gleevec, which was developed by Novartis. Clinical trials of ceflatonin began about five years ago, but were halted when Gleevec was released.
