A prow-shaped wall of windows and a dramatic vaulted ceiling in the new family room create a better addition than a plain big box crammed with the most square feet possible, says architect Edward Shannon.
And that's what Peggy and Dave Shumway chose for their 1970s Palatine house.
The Shumways enjoyed their home before they expanded the kitchen and added the window-studded breakfast area and family room, but it had some drawbacks.
The first floor had two big problems that were fixed by the project.
