A book about an extremely long ditch might seem an unlikely project for noted economist-author Peter L. Bernstein.
Unless that ditch is the Erie Canal, a technological innovation that connected the Atlantic Ocean to the interior of the country and, in the process, "molded the triumph of the United States as a continental power and as a giant in the world economy," as Bernstein writes in the introduction to "Wedding of the Waters: The Erie Canal and the Making of a Great Nation" (W.W.
