WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration, which favors tighter government reins on the huge mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is weighing in on the debate following Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan's call for Congress to limit their multibillion-dollar holdings to avoid endangering U.S. financial markets.
A move afoot on Capitol Hill could bring stricter oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and possible limits on their size in the wake of accounting scandals at the government-sponsored mortgage companies.
