TYPECASTING WAS JUST AROUND the corner for Jack Wilson. Another very good year in the field, a given for the Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop, coupled with another very ordinary offensive performance, would just about do it.

Good field, no hit? That label would be a bit extreme and certainly harsh, since Wilson had proved he could slightly exceed .250 in 2002 and in 2003. But his on-base percentage was barely above .300 in those years, proof Wilson was too sporadic to be praised for being pesky, let alone perceived as any kind of offensive threat.
