Just a minute. I'm boiling an egg," says industrial designer Ted Muehling as he ushers a visitor into his downtown Manhattan studio one weekday morning.
The offbeat greeting is not a breakfast invitation. The egg in question is clay, and once it's been boiled atop Muehling's industrial stove, he'll slice and facet it, transforming it into a prototype stopper for a decanter he's designing for Steuben Glass.
"It's been a challenge to work with heavy lead crystal," says the 52-year-old ponytailed Muehling, and it's not hard to believe. He has built his reputation for delicacy on ethereal "rice-gain" earrings and fragile porcelain bisque candlesticks cast ...
