The first day Shannon Bell took her junior dragster out for a practice drive in Greenbrier Middle School's parking lot, Ken Bell grabbed hold of the roll cage and ran beside the car. He couldn't force himself to let go of his little girl.
That night, the 9-year-old fourth-grader at Greenbrier Intermediate returned home and felt sick to her stomach. She couldn't eat the rest of the night, and she couldn't shake her jitters.
Shannon realized driving a car was not child's play. She also realized she wanted to race that car.
