Oscar Smith High girls track coach Chris Brumm knew Crystal Roscoe was something special when he saw her run several years ago as an eighth-grader in the Chesapeake Middle School city track meet.
Roscoe ran the anchor leg in a relay, and was holding steady in second place. Then she tripped in a hole and hit the ground.
"She got back up," Brumm said, "and worked so hard she almost won the race. I made sure I recruited her for the team the next season."
Roscoe joined Smith's team the next year, and came within three seconds of the school record in the 400 meters.
