A declining birth rate is not a new phenomenon. The last census in 2001 showed that, for the first time, there were more people in the country aged over 60 than under 16.
These are the product of the baby boom that ended with the 60s. Meanwhile, birth rates have declined since the mid-70s.
The feminist movement of the 80s has further contributed to the trend toward smaller families as more mothers continue to work and both parents juggle careeers with child-rearing.
