New buds might be bursting through the soil at the Denver Botanic Gardens, but look beyond the fresh blooms and you'll see an institution desperate for a face-lift.
Concrete lampposts are beginning to crack. One of the facility's 41-year-old boilers leaks. The clay pipes supporting the 30-year-old irrigation system are deteriorating.
"We have not turned on the water yet this year. But when we do, we'll have a blowout somewhere," gardens Chief Executive John Scully said during a recent tour.
