The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ushered in a new line of fashion for the coal industry just in time for spring--heavy metal for the full-figured coal plant--with a designer price tag.
State-of-the-art pollution control technologies often horde space with their additions of metal and concrete, thus expanding the "waistline" or footprint at coal plants. Environmental compliance is not cheap, but many claim coal generation still offers more bang for the buck over the long haul, even with the new Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR) and Mercury Rule (NGW Mar, 14, p8).
