Apr. 11--With the passage of state legislation that includes $1.6 million for a Jamaica Bay Greenway, proponents of the recreational plan are hoping Gov. Pataki will sign it into law by tomorrow.
The Jamaica Bay appropriation, which is part of the Transportation, Economic Development and Environmental Conservation budget bill, landed on Pataki's desk March 31. He was given up to 10 days to make a decision.
Sarah Kogel-Smucker of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter said many locals are unaware of the recreational opportunities in their own backyard.
