HER creed was blunt. Presenting women as objects of sexual fantasy would lead to rape, wife-battering and other forms of violence, as well as demeaning their sex.
This belief led to Andrea Dworkin, whose own life was free from any of the adornments associated with glamour, to becoming a feminist icon to some and a figure of ridicule or hate to others.
Amid the furore, however, she wrote 13 books, ranging from short stories and novels to poetry, most touched by the evils of pornography. To friends, she was a kindly woman with a keen sense of humour, a truth far removed from the unflattering portrayal she suffered in the popular media.
