Apr. 13--Last year, the Indiana County Humane Society took in thousands of lost, misunderstood, unwanted and unloved dogs and cats, giving them food, warmth and a little affection. It found new homes for some, and gave others the gentlest of sendoffs into the next world.
In doing these good deeds, the shelter also overspent its budget by about $60,000. It pays just $1 a year in rent on a county-owned property, but even that big break couldn't help the shelter break even.
