ST. LOUIS _ The fragrance of lilac is fresh and floral with sweet undertones, as they say in the perfumeries.

In gardens, it's a scent that reminds us of spring and perhaps of pink or purple plantings near the swing on Grandmother's porch.

New gardeners are coming "back home," as it were, to such so-called Grandma plants.

They're trying peonies, hydrangeas and heirloom roses along with a few other old-fashioned bloomers, including the lilacs that flower about this time each year.
