General Motors says it needs help from Washington to bring its health care costs more in line with those of import-brand competitors. But the outlook is not bright for major or quick relief.
GM understands the political reality that a big government-funded health care solution is not in the cards. So it has a relatively modest wish list. Yet odds still are against prompt action.
GM provides health insurance to 1.1 million active and retired employees and their families. It says health care expenses add about $1,500 to the cost of every vehicle GM built in the United States last year.
