PHOENIX, ARIZ. -- Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation was dramatically superior to percussion with postural drainage for pediatric atelectasis in a trial at Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo.
Partially collapsed lungs improved in all 17 children given intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV) during the randomized clinical trial, according to investigator Christopher L. Hubble, M.D. In the percussion with postural drainage (P&PD) arm of the study, 11 children had no change in atelectasis, and 4 became worse. Only one child became better. Investigators stopped the study after assessing the first group of intubated patients.
