Article: Cree and Boston University Announce Settlement of Litigation With AXT, Inc.

Cree, Inc. and Boston University announced today that they have reached a settlement with AXT, Inc. in the patent infringement lawsuit brought against AXT in June 2003 for infringement of U.S. Patent No. 5,686,738. The patent, which Cree licenses from the University on an exclusive basis, relates to technology developed by Boston University Professor Theodore Moustakas directed to gallium nitride-based buffer layers used with sapphire and other substrates. Cree and the University alleged infringement based on light- emitting diodes previously manufactured by AXT, and AXT asserted various counterclaims.
