A study published today in the February 12, 2004, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that including rapidly obtained B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) measurements in the diagnostic regimen used to evaluate emergency room patients with dyspnea can lead to improved treatment and reduced costs. Dyspnea, or shortness of breath, is a primary symptom of heart failure and results in more than 4 million visits to U.S. emergency departments each year. Biosite(R) Incorporated manufactures and sells the Triage(R) BNP Test, a 20 minute blood test, used in the study and currently used in approximately 2,335 U.S. hospitals.
