The ban on phosphorus fertilizer in Dane County has some consumers and retailers scratching their head this spring.
Some didn't know about it and some don't agree with it, but many are giving phosphorus-free fertilizers a try.
The ban, which went into effect Jan. 1, was approved by the Madison City Council and Dane County last year.
Most lawn fertilizers contain phosphorus, a nutrient that's blamed for causing lake weeds. But throughout Dane County, brightly colored bags of phosphorus-free fertilizers are being stocked.
