Article: Omega-3 heart health claims given go-ahead by UK's JHCI.(Joint Health Claim Initiative)(www.jhci.org.uk)

The UK food industry has been given the go-ahead to promote omega-3 polyunsaturates in the battle to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. These special fatty acids, found in oily fish, fish oil supplements and in oils derived from algae, have repeatedly been proven to reduce the risk of death from heart disease but, until now, the industry has been unable to make that health claim in its packaging or promotional material.

After examining a dossier of scientific evidence submitted by a UK consortium, the Joint Health Claims Initiative* has agreed that such a claim may be used in future. The approved form of words for the claim is:
