Apr. 16--PROVIDENCE -- Brake problems forced Amtrak to shut down its Acela Express trains between Washington and Boston yesterday, making service at the Providence station unpredictable as the company scrambled to add replacement trains.
All Acela service will be suspended at least through next Wednesday and will probably be shut down for much longer because of newly discovered cracks in disc brakes, said Amtrak chief operating officer Bill Crosbie.
Introduced in 2000 and capable of traveling at 150 mph, the Acela is part of the rail system's attempt to make itself over.
