MESA, Ariz. -The scene was the visitors clubhouse at old Milwaukee County Stadium.

The Cubs in September 2000 were lurching toward a 97-loss season. On a cold, gray afternoon, a couple of young players walked wide-eyed into the locker room, toting bags from the Cubs' Class AA West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, who had just won the Southern League championship.

One player was Corey Patterson. The other was Will Ohman.

Patterson has gone on to be a fixture in center for field the Cubs. Ohman had his cup of coffee with the Cubs in 2000 and pitched in 11 games for them in 2001.
