WASHINGTON _ The wit and ready jokes are still there for Henry Hyde. So too is the eloquent voice that his opponents learned to fear and admire.
Hyde, who wielded his charm and intellect to advance deeply conservative principles, announced Monday that he is departing Congress, ending a political career that established him not simply as an icon of the right but as an embodiment of a bygone era of cordiality and courtly debate.
