The Dresden Staatskapelle, Myung Whun Chung conducting, Sunday afternoon at Symphony Hall.
Sunday afternoon's Celebrity Series appearance by the Dresden Staatskapelle at Symphony Hall couldn't help but give off an old-world aura. The orchestra, after all, appearing here under the baton of conductor Myung Whun Chung, is not only one of Germany's most prestigious cultural organizations, but one of its oldest, dating back 450 years.
The Staatskapelle offered two of the most demanding works in all of Brahms' repertory: the second piano concerto, with soloist Emanuel Ax, and after intermission, the fourth symphony.
