THE scene conjured up images of Gulliver's emergence amid the Lilliputians, or Alice's shrinking in Wonderland. As the Prime Minister stepped on stage at Edinburgh's Corn Exchange on Tuesday, his Chancellor and Transport Secretary alongside, the fourth member of the group, Jack McConnell, seemed diminished by their presence.
The fantasy that First Minister and Prime Minister are separate but equal was shattered. Tony Blair is serving on borrowed time. He needs Gordon Brown at his side to lend him credibility.
