Twenty-three 6th graders from Bayside Elementary in Sausalito were able to experience this week the type of education that may become increasingly scarce as state budget cuts reverberate throughout California. They studied marine ecology at the beach, looked at pond inhabitants under microscopes, and learned about watersheds in a week-long hands-on science and environmental education immersion program in the Marin Headlands. The students' program at Yosemite National Institutes was funded by a $100,000 grant from the National Geographic Society's Education Foundation, which brought them out of their classrooms into the exciting world of science in the outdoors.
