THE election of Pope Benedict XVI was welcomed today in Liverpool.
Joseph Ratzinger was elected as the 265th pope by the College of Cardinals last night in one of the fastest papal elections of the past century.
Bells chimed at St Peter's Basilica as Pope Benedict emerged on to the balcony and waved at the crowds.
Tens of thousands of flag-waving pilgrims filled the square, chanting 'Viva il Papa!' - 'long live the Pope'.
