There are currently three leukotriene modifiers approved for use in the pediatric population. This paper will review the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic rhinitis and the associated family burden. The use of leukotriene modifiers for step-up management of asthma and allergic rhinitis as recommended by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP), their action, dosing, side effects, and nursing implications will be reviewed.
