As both a contemplative, an activist and a poet, Thomas Merton was well-known for his prodigious output of books, poems, letters, essays and newspaper articles, all the while carrying out his daily tasks as a monk at the Abbey of Gethsemane in Kentucky.
That activity was so intense, interest in it has continued unabated more than a quarter century after his death, with thirty published books, the Merton Library on the UBC campus to open next year and the Thomas Merton Society of Canada's first event in Victoria, a one-day conference, "Thomas Merton: A Man for Our Time," held on March 5 at the University of Victoria.
